Cilvektiesibas.info in 2023 - What's topical in human rights for Latvia

Cilvektiesibas.info is a non-profit platform for human rights news, opinion and feature articles. It brings together professionals, academics, students, non-governmental organisations and public institutions to inform the public about human rights issues and events of importance to Latvia at both national and international level, covering both legislation and events, as well as publications, opinion pieces and interviews.

In 2023, Cilvektiesibas.info continued its active operation and development, ensuring both the development of reporters' and authors' competences and involvement in voluntary public activities, as well as the availability of information on human rights to the public.

  • Volunteer authors and reporters - especially young professionals and law students - were involved in the creation and maintenance of the platform's content. The project involved volunteer reporters and authors working under the guidance of experienced editors. 19 new authors and reporters were recruited in 2023, 14 of them young people. In total, the network of volunteer writers and reporters in 2023 had 53 members, including 41 young people.
  • In 2023, 98 articles were produced and published on the platform. Significantly, 44 publications were thematic and opinion pieces, the development of which was the result of a in-depth research effort. In 2023, the most popular topic among authors was freedom of expression and media freedom, with a total of 8 articles published during the year.
  • A new section "Conversations" was introduced on the portal, where 6 discussions and interviews with prominent Latvian human rights experts and defenders were published in cooperation with the Riga Graduate School of Law.
  • In the summer of 2023, the "Let Human Rights Speak" writing competition was organised in cooperation with the Latvian Ombudsman's Office, which resulted in the publication of three articles by the winners of the competition.
  • During 2023, the three most popular articles were on the "Let Human Rights Speak" competition, the protection of whistleblowers' freedom of expression and on human rights violations related to accusations of witchcraft and ritual attacks.
  • To disseminate the portal more widely, LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter were actively used, sharing the information on the latest articles and reaching new audiences.

We would like to thank all the authors and partners who contributed to the creation and development of the content of Cilvektiesibas.info. It helps to transfer knowledge about human rights issues to the wider public.

We are grateful to the Foundation for Public Integration and the EEA/Norway Grant Programme for their financial support in 2023 and look forward to a successful cooperation in the future.
